I have almost eight year's experience of providing private, peripatetic teaching. I also tutor mature adults who either wish to return to study, or find a new voracity for knowledge. The ages of my students range from 5-60+ years old. Indeed I have worked in a bilingual (English-Welsh) school.
A First Class Honours graduate of King's College London (and the Royal Academy of Music), I have a wide and extensive knowledge of the arts and humanities. Coupled with my formal training in Further Mathematics, I am an extremely well-read tutor with a unique combination of skills and a razor sharp mind. My students benefit from this.
I read electives in ethics, film, history, and philosophy. My dissertation, awarded distinction, explored European aesthetic philosophies in tandem with mathematical art concepts. During my degree I was invited, by a department professor, to co-lead course discussion due to academic excellence.
I am a published writer, poet, short story competition winner, and collaborator (with Notting Hill Essay Longlist, Spectator and Standpoint journalists). Currently, during spare hours, I am editing an anthology of historical works by a lesser-known WWI poet in time for 2018 for which I have collaborated with the University of Exeter's Department of English and Heritage Collections.
I have also worked as an arts & politics researcher for the Institute of Art & Ideas in London, helping to devise the programme of the world's largest music and philosophy festival, HowTheLightGetsIn. This role involved collaborating with international leading thinkers, such as poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, in the areas of their speciality: particularly European literature, philosophy, and history. I have also worked with the Arts & Humanities Research Council.
Concerning my performance grounding, I have appeared at: Birmingham Symphony Hall, Fortune Theatre Bristol, St George's Concert Hall Bristol, St Mary Redcliffe Bristol, King's College London Great Hall, London Southbank Royal Festival Hall, The Old Duke Bristol, Colston Hall Bristol, St David's Hall Cardiff, Son et Lumiere, and Channel 4. I have also worked with BAFTA film projects in a compositional capacity. I have performed Shakespeare, Jacobean, devised, mime (a 'son et lumiere' production), children's, musical, European (Ibsen, Chekov, Lorca and more), slapstick, Brechtian, Stanivslowki and method theatre.
At the invitation of schools I have also provided group lessons, founded mentor schemes, and given extracurricular history lectures with support of the Lessons From Auschwitz project. I have much experience of giving extra GCSE and A-Level assistance for young students, as well as university/conservatoire application/audition consultation.
Typically, lessons are goal-oriented and aim towards either improving academic performance, exam preparation, or an arts performance. However, I do offer exploratory lessons in a casual capacity. I am fully up-to-date with a host of formal syllabi.
I often encourage my students to take a 'break' lesson every once in a while in order to plug some of the gaps in learning that state syllabi leave. Generally this brief moment away from 'goal oriented stress' serves to re-enthuse! Since I tutor for the love of it, I want my students to be learning for the love of it too!
My new students are never daunted: I take extra care to provide necessary equipment without fuss and confusion.
For younger students, hourly lessons can be shortened. I also like to work with parents, where appropriate, to make sure their child is getting the sort of education, support, and encouragement that they respond to.
