My name is Hollie King and I am 19 years of age.
In September I will be studying childhood studies at Leeds Beckett university. I have just finished studying health and social care for three years at college. As part of my college course we got given various placements, one of which for myself was at a nursing home. My placement consisted of helping the activities coordinators with different activities for the residents. This was meant to last for 5 Tuesday's but I enjoyed it so much and they loved having me that I ended up staying for about 15 Tuesday's. On my first day I was leading a game of bingo and making cups of tea and getting to know the residents. Mill lane nursing home were so impressed with my hard work and commitment that they offered me a part time job there working around my studies. I have now been employed there for a year and a half and I wouldn't change my job for the world.
There's nothing more I love then sitting with the residents listening to their stories and making them feel comfortable and at home. Most of our residents have dementia of some sort so are quite confused most of the time, I love to make them feel calm and spend my break times sitting with them and keeping them occupied by playing games with them, painting their nails, or even just having a cup of tea and a chat.
