I am a very genuine person who did some elderly care work when I split with sons father. I saw the good and the bad in how people look after family members and the little things that could be done to give their relatives some dignity in their absence.
Such things as making sure that they have clean clothes and the right sort of food in the fridge that can realistically be prepared in the allocated time but that is still nutritonal. An example would be finding a solid frozen lump of fish in an old ladies freezers, no meals on wheels, no vegetables or other food stuffs in the house.
Someone putting newspaper in their husband undies instead of incontinence pads, but really trying to understand why. You have to look at the family members situation and are they getting the help they should to care for their relative. It is only to easy to be judgemental.
I can run things 'ship shape and bristol fashion' but with a sense of humour and giving the person the dignity they deserve.
Whether it is pets, children, the elderly on someone who just needs a hand I would give my very best.

I believe this sort of work should be paid better than it is and that if you do not pay the best rates you may not get the right people. I have worked for an agency doing care work but just at the weekends. I doubt if they will give me a good reference however as I left them because I had to wait six months for fuel costs and we didnt part on the best of terms. i can get lots of references however from previous colleagues about how good I am at caring for others, health and safety matters, first aid. I have worked for three local authorities working with the public as an Environmental Health Officer and as a Family Support Workers for Children's Services as well as for Housing as a Neighbourhood Ranger dealing with the wellbeing of residents and vulnerable individuals. As well as dealing with things in the Environment.
