I have almost eight year's experience of providing private, peripatetic teaching specialising in children's music education; extensive ensemble experience from wind bands to the orchestra as a soloist and Head of Section. I have lead small ensembles of woodwind and jazz/swing groups for education purposes.
In addition to a rigorous three-years musicology programme at King's College (during which I fortuitously earned several perfect scores), I studied a range of crossover subjects including film music and aesthetics. Tutored by renown composer Robert Keeley, this extra research - as well as my knowledge of complex jazz harmony - has given my music theory and composition greater depth. To this day I collaborate with other up-and-coming British composers.
I have performed in a variety of professional venues including Birmingham Symphony Hall, St George's Concert Hall Bristol (Crusell's Clarinet Concerto), St Mary Redcliffe Bristol, King's College London Great Hall, London Southbank Royal Festival Hall, The Old Duke Bristol (jazz), Colston Hall Bristol (jazz), and Channel 4. I have film scoring experience alongside BAFTA composer Martin Kiszko and continually collaborate with up-and-coming artists.
At the invitation of schools I have also provided group lessons. I have given GCSE and A-Level assistance for young music students, as well as audition consultation. I also tutor mature adults who wish to return to musical study. The ages of my students range from 5-60+ years old.
Typically lessons focus on helping students to achieve their ABRSM grades in performance or theory, or on concert preparation. However coursework and composition and be focal too, and I am also pliable to those who simply wish for casual lessons for the love of music. I encourage my students to take a 'break' lesson every once in a while that refocuses on the love of music and not simply on technical development and individual pieces. I am also not one for leaving sight reading and aural training to the last minute: these are an ongoing part of my lessons.
My new students are never daunted: I take extra care to provide necessary equipment without fuss and confusion. I also believe in developing musical appreciation and encourage my students to develop their own taste and to choose the repertoire they wish to learn, whether that be from a syllabus or otherwise.
Introducing children to music, especially, is beneficial for their growth, confidence, and creativity. For this reason I have a lightweight Bundy beginner's clarinet I am willing to loan - for free - to the first young student I take on following my recent move.
I work with parents, where appropriate, to make sure their child is getting the sort of education, support, and encouragement that they respond to.
PLEASE NOTE: I will only teach on pianos or professional keyboards (not amateur keyboards).
