Throughout my training & working experiences I have participated in a wide range of activities from planning and implementing activities for children, carrying out observations and planning next steps, cooking and preparing meals, cleaning, and carrying out basic first aid. Most recently I have taken responsibility for the home schooling of four children during the pandemic lockdown. I planned their day following the same structure as a typical school day while ensuring I covered all areas of the curriculum for each of the age groups I was teaching. This included undertaking an activity which demonstrated the water cycle using food colouring, water and shaving foam. This also involved calmly but firmly reminding the children of the need to work safety during the activity. Safeguarding and child protection is a vital part of my current job role, as the sole practitioner working with a group of children I am responsible for their safety and wellbeing. During my time in schools and nurseries I would pass on any safeguarding concerns to the designated safeguarding lead, but during my work at present, I have adapted my practice slightly by ensuring I keep up to date records which I can use to pass onto the local safeguarding childrens hub or the childrens school should the need arise.
During my time in a Primary School setting I acted as cover supervisor during a period of staff illness as well as assessment times. During this time, I took responsibility for planning and implementing lessons and activities in line with the school curriculum and timetable – this planning often took place with little advance warning. I also took responsibility for the planning and assessment of phonics teaching for a mixed year one and two group including the phonics screening assessments, spellings and reporting back to the class teacher to help promote positive communication and management of childrens development and progress tracking for school reports and records. I have gained experience using pupil asset for registration and record keeping which has helped promote consistency and continuity in childrens learning as well as making sure all staff members working within the classroom are on the same lines with regard to childrens achievements and goals, specifically when the teachers are working on a job share basis.
I have just completed my BA Honours Degree in Early Learning which qualifies me to work as a cover supervisor/HLTA.
I have significant experience with record keeping including incident reports, accident reports and behaviour records in line with the settings policies and procedures.
Furthermore, during my six years at College & University I have gained a wide variety of work experience within Primary Schools, Nursery settings and extracurricular/after school activities. In these placements I have provided 1:1 support for children with additional needs including English as an additional language, autism, ADHD, speech impairment and hearing impairment. I have a keen interest in supporting children with additional needs by providing them the best support and assistance through early interventions. I was also responsible for the phonics planning, teaching and record keeping for a small group of children as well as supporting intervention groups and 1:1 intervention.
My transferable skills include teamwork, organisation and planning, communication with groups, particularly children, drama & music and confident ICT use. I have a passion for music and believe it plays an important part in children’s development and wellbeing, having seen the benefits of this during my 1:1 work with an autistic child. I also have experience using a wide range of technology including computers, cameras, tablets and sound engineering equipment.
I have also recently completed my dissertation on “A Critical Look at the Benefits of Forest School and Outdoor Play on Children in a Primary School Environment.” Through research and investigation, I have developed a keen interest and wider understanding of the impact and benefits of a varied curriculum and flexible delivery. I found that outdoor learning can be a very valuable tool in supporting children with additional needs. Bringing the classroom outside is a valuable way to help children build self-esteem and take responsibility for their own learning.
I am keen and passionate about my professional development and have used this time during lockdown to participate in some online CPD courses as well as finishing my degree. I have recently completed a British sign language course and hope to be able to use this in my practice. I am now in the process of completing an open university course on supporting childrens mental health and wellbeing and hope to progress onto teacher training at some stage in the future, however for the next few years I wish to refine my classroom skills and gain more confidence leading whole class activities.
